Business Continuity Must Include Payroll Readiness, AscentHR Says

Philippine companies need to treat workforce administration as part of business continuity planning as severe weather and typhoons continue to interrupt regular operations, according to AscentHR. The HR technology and workforce solutions provider is urging enterprises to modernize their systems for scheduling, payroll, and compliance so changing work patterns do not create avoidable delays or errors.

The call follows Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data showing average weekly hours worked declining from 40.6 in July to 39.2 in August 2026. Bad weather was a primary factor behind the reduction. Disrupted working hours can affect employees’ take-home pay while requiring employers to review attendance, adjust variable shifts, calculate overtime, and complete statutory reporting accurately.

The pressure is compounded by labor market conditions. Unemployment eased to 5.3% in August, but underemployment remained at 11.9%, representing approximately 5.9 million employed Filipinos seeking additional hours or secondary income. The International Labour Organization has identified heat stress and severe weather as causes of millions of lost working hours annually in tropical climate zones, affecting labor-intensive and shift-based operations.

“Operational resilience isn’t just about disaster recovery, but it’s about having payroll and workforce technology agile enough to accommodate weather disruptions and seasonal hours without administrative drag,” said Subramanyam Sreenivasaiah, Founder and CEO of AscentHR. He said automated shift tracking, flexible variable-pay engines, and real-time compliance safeguards can help businesses make operational changes while ensuring accurate and timely employee compensation.

As companies prepare for fourth-quarter seasonal hiring, AscentHR recommends reviewing HR infrastructure for flexibility, localized compliance, and real-time data visibility. Its PowerPay and StoHRM platforms integrate automation, cloud analytics, and localized compliance features tailored to the Philippine market.
